Winthrop Day

--The city of Winthrop has a population of approximately 1,300 people.  The mayor is David Trebelhorn.

 

--This past April at KNUJ’s Player of the Year banquet, GFW senior Reed Sallstrom was named the Boys Basketball Player of the Year.  Over 54 area athletes were honored at the banquet.

 

--In September GFW named their Homecoming Royalty, Chelsey Vorwerk was named the Queen and Aaron Bruns was crowned the King.

 

--This past July Minnesota’s Department of Education released the results of this past year MCA-2 standardized tests.  The GFW schools scored 57% on the math portion and 62% on the reading.

 

--The new Winthrop Area Clinic opened this past year.  The Clinic is located in the former Kranz Pub building.  The clinic is open 5 days a week and offers many of the same services as the New Ulm Clinic. 

 

--The City of Winthrop hosted the Kids Against Hunger food-packing event again this past March.  In the last four years nearly 900 volunteers from Winthrop packaged almost 250,000 meals that helped feed hungry children all across the world.

 

--The Winthrop Good Samaritan Society received a grant from the Minnesota Department of Workplace Safety.  The $7,700 grant went towards purchasing safe patient-handling equipment. 

 

--This past April Alyssa Neid was names the 2008 Miss Winthrop.  Alyssa is the daughter of Gary and Vickie Neid. 

 

--Winthrop resident Lynette Froehlich won $200,000 as she matched the first 5 numbers in a September 3rd Powerball Lottery drawing. 

 

--The Winthrop Area Chamber of Commerce held it’s annual banquet this past October.  Ron Hansen was this year’s winner of the Appreciation Award, Lois Majeski was presented with the Good Samaritan Award, and Sue Rickhiem was named the Chamber’s new President, she succeeds Mike Rettmann.

 

--The City recently purchased 11.7-acres of land that will be used for the new industrial park.  The cost for the industrial park is expected to cost around $1.2-million. 

 

--This past April the city of Winthrop hired Mark Eriickson as the new City Administrator and EDA director.  Eriickson took over for Sam Shult who retired in October of 2007.
