KNUJ Radio in New Ulm celebrated its 60th Anniversary Friday, May 22, with special guests of past years broadcasting with the station.
Program Director, Brian Filzen, and Station Manager, Jim Bartels, assembled this group of past KNUJ staffers:
Tim Babel - Babel was an announcer on KNUJ in the 80's and 90's
Mike Stark - Stark is a former Program Director and announcer of 15 years with the station in the 70's and 80's
John Mons - Mons is a former host of the 'Saturday All Afternoon Country Show' on KNUJ and announcer in the 70's. Mons also played with many popular bands throughout the area.
Herb Schaper - Schaper was one of the first sports play by play voice on KNUJ after the station went on the air in 1949. He aslo was a close associate of station founder, Walt Mickelson.
Warren Ascher - Ascher was one of the original announcers on KNUJ when it went on the air on May 22, 1949, and serviced as a news broadcaster and sales representative.
KNUJ All Star Anniversary Band played live in studio. KNUJ featured the Six Fat Dutchmen Band as its first music on May 22, 1949, at 12:30pm following a half hour introductory program. Two of the musicians who sat in 60 years ago played with the KNUJ All Stars on Friday....Slivers Dewanz and Johnny Arsers!!
Perry Galvin and Don Brand - Galvin joined KNUJ in the 60's and held nearly every position at the station in his 30+ year KNUJ career, including serveral years as General Manager. Brand served as news director for several years in the 70's and 80's.
Marj Frederickson - Frederickson joined KNUJ in 1979 and retired in 2007. She was a sales representative, Sales Manager and General Manager during this time.
Don Miller - Miller came to KNUJ just months after it went on the air in 1949. He was one of the most beloved KNUJ announcers of all time and did much to launch KNUJ's strong affiliation with Polka music.
