– The City of Hanska has a population of approximately 450 people. The Mayor is Dick Willis.
– The Hanska area is home to the Lin-Hans-Rud Dancers. The group has Scandinavian folk dancers from around the region. Up to 70 people participate in the group, which includes adult, junior, and children’s divisions. The dancers perform at festivals around the area, and have even performed at Walt Disney World in Florida .
– Hanska’s “Blackstad Brothers” are referred to as Minnesota ’s answer to the Everly Brothers. Dennis and Craig Blackstad are still performing, but only for special events.
– Proud of their Norwegian heritage, Hanska has a Sons of Norway lodge which meets monthly.
– The Hanska City Council voted unanimously in 2008 to proceed with a replacement of the playground equipment at Hanska Park with a new “Slidetopia” playground. The old playground equipment will be donated to the Hanska Baseball Association on the condition that repairs are made before it is erected at the ball field.
– The Hanska Community Library welcomed Madelia Native Sue Bruss as the new Library Director in 2008. Hanska Native and New Ulm High School Sophomore Sadie Blackstad was welcomed as Library Assistant.
– Brandy Kuck of Hanska received the New Ulm Human Rights Commission’s annual Martin Luther King Junior Award in 2008. Brandy Kuck received the award mainly due to her many years of devotion to the Special Olympics. She helped establish the New Ulm Area group 12 years ago and has many years of experience helping people with intellectual disabilities in her career with MRCI and the MBW Company as well.
