Glencoe Day

– City of Glencoe’s Mayor is Randy Wilson and the population is approximately 5100.

 

– McLeod County gave the 2008 Butter Knife Award to the Glencoe Dairy Queen.

 

– Glencoe Silver Lake crowned Sarah Blazinski as Homecoming Queen in 2008.  GSL Homecoming King was Josh Kraby.

 

– Ron Jungclaus of Glencoe was honored for his years of service with the USDA Farm Service Agency during The McLeod County Corn and Soybean Growers annual Banquet and Agriculture Appreciation night in 2008.

 

– Glencoe Silver Lake student Miriam Unseth took 2nd place in the Serious Interpretation of Poetry category. 92 teams from high schools across Minnesota competed in the Class A State Speech Tournament in 2008.

 

– Glencoe Silver Lake High School student Danielle Schwarzrock won a statewide art contest in 2008. Danielle Schwarzrock submitted a flag design which was chosen from more than 300 entries to represent Minnesota at a national exhibit. As a large-scale-flag it will be displayed in St. Paul and in Washington DC.

 

– Jeff Kuhn of Glencoe won a brand new, bright orange Ford Mustang in a drawing by Tiger Drug in Stillwater in 2008. The former school bus driver was 1 of nearly 10,000 people that entered the contest.

 

– The Glencoe Silver Lake National Honor Society collected over 100 pieces of clothing to be sent to an American military hospital in Germany in 2008. Around $300 was collected as well and items not used in Germany will be sent to field hospitals in Iraq or Afghanistan.

 

– Glencoe Light and Power Commission received statewide recognition in 2008 for an innovative project to generate electricity from garbage by burning methane gas generated at the Spruce Ridge landfill. The Commission was presented a “System Innovation Award” by the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association.

 

–Construction began in 2008 for the new 64-unit assisted living facility in the City of Glencoe. The $6.7-million Grand Meadows facility will include independent and assisted-living units as well as memory-care apartments.

 

– The Glencoe City Council approved a plan in 2008 to construct a fish pond in the City of Glencoe’s Oak Leaf Park. The land has been donated by the Glencoe Sportsmen Club, and the McLeod Chapter of Conservation Partners of America has offered a sizeable cash donation as well.  Glencoe City Park Superintendent Mike Drew said it will be a great asset for the community.
