Fairfax Day

--The city of Fairfax has a population of approximately 1,300 people. The mayor of Fairfax is Kevin Schaefer.

 

--Fairfax has it’s own recreational trail; the paved trail runs along Highway 4 from Fairfax to Fort Ridgely.

 

-- Minnesota’s Department of Education recently released the MCA test scores, 62 percent of the state was proficient in math and 71 percent in the reading portion.  The GFW schools had a score of 57 percent in the math portion and 62 percent in the reading. 

 

--Fairfax native Chris Domeier was recently hired as a police officer by the City of Renville.

 

--On April 19th there was a birthday party held for Bill “Mac” McGowan, he is celebrating his 100th  McGowan is also a member of the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.

 

--Fairfax resident Mary Peichel who is a member of the Minnesota Pork Board was one of several area pork producers to represent Minnesota down at the National Pork Forum in St. Louis, Missouri this past year.

 

--GFW student Reed Sallstrom was named the boys basketball player of the year at the 46th annual KNUJ player of the year banquet this past April.

 

--The students at GFW nominated the 2008 homecoming king and queen this past September, the Queen was Chelsey Vorwerk and the King was Aaron Burns. 

 

--This past June the first annual Fairfax Summer Celebration was held.  The celebration included a street dance, classic car and tractor show, volleyball, softball, beanbag and horseshoe tournaments, bingo, and also a craft fair.  The Fairfax Jaycees hosted the event.

 

--In June Kacie Murphy was named the 2008 Miss Fairfax. Samantha Sandmann was named 1st Princess, Gabrielle Linsmeier was the 2nd Princess and Miss Congeniality; Kendra Kent was named the new Miss Junior Fairfax and Julia Schweiss was named Little Miss Fairfax.

 

--Last January the GFW held the Science Fair, Ashley Jackson and Emily Bengston won the “Best of Show” award for their project, “Do Strengthening Shampoos Work?”  Overall 17 GFW students advanced to the Regional Science Fair at MSU Mankato.

 

--Last July Fairfax residents Holly and Randy Weikle got a pleasant surprise when they won 10,000 dollars at the New Ulm Dominos.  When they order the new Gotham City pizza, they became the winners of the Gotham City sweepstakes.  They were one of twenty-one people nationally to win the 10,000 dollars.

 

--The 47th annual Fairfax community United Fund Drive took place this past December.  The donations are distributed to local groups in need.  In 2008 they donated to twenty-one different groups and organizations.

 

--This past September the Fairfax Legion Club closed, the main causes for the closing is the increases in expenses, shrinking membership and also low attendance at past public events.

 

--Fairfax resident Darlene Zimmerman was named the Minnesota Quilter of the year for 2008 by the Minnesota Quilters association.  She is a fabric designer, has written quilting books, and also has a website www.feedsacklady.com.
