– The City of Buffalo Lake has a population of about 800 people and the Mayor is Joyce Nyhus.
– The City of Hector has a population of around 1,200 people and the Mayor is Jeff Heerdt.
– Buffalo Lake and Hector are both located in Renville County .
– The Buffalo Lake Hector School District received national recognition for it’s academic success in 2008. A U.S. News & World Report feature listed BLH as one of the Best High Schools in the nation. Only 36 schools from Minnesota were on the list.
– Buffalo Lake Hector’s Homecoming Queen for 2008 was Kasey Peterson and the Homecoming King was Tyler Bruns.
– Gene Johnson of Hector was honored in 2008 for his 60 years of service to the city’s American Legion. Gene Johnson is in his 28th year as Post Adjutant and is currently in charge of all youth education programs in the Hector area.
– It was decided in 2008 that the City of Hector would get all new sidewalks. Planning for the large project also included new lights and fencing in some areas.

– Several residents of the Buffalo Lake and Hector area were big winners in the Renville County Habitat For Humanity Raffle in 2008. Sherri Broderius of Hector won a laptop computer while Susan Karnik of Buffalo Lake won a 27" digital tv, and Sharon Stark of Buffalo Lake won a video I-Pod.
– Buffalo Lake Hector School District enrollment numbers were up for 2008. The district now has over 600 students in K through 12, with nearly 120 from open enrollment.
– Loftness Specialized Farm Equipment in Hector was awarded nearly 400-thousand dollars in state and federal grant money in 2008 to allow the company to develop a new product line.
– Lark Schweiss, the daughter of Mike and Julie Schweiss, competed with over 500 riders from all 50 states at the 2008 Wellpride American Eventing Championships. Lark Schweiss and her pony, Taco, participated in the Junior-Young Rider Division at the national event in Wayne, Illinois.
– Work was begun in 2008 on “The Downtown Project”, improvements to the Highway 4 corridor, in the City of Hector.
– The City of Buffalo Lake Post Office is getting a new post office, 5-and-a half years after the community’s precious post office was destroyed by a tornado. Several buildings in downtown Buffalo Lake, including the post office, were demolished by the early evening tornado on June 24th, 2003.
