      Nominations are now being accepted until July 10th for the Brown County Outstanding Senior Citizen Recognition for 2015.

       

      Seniors who have reached the age of 70 by June 1st of this year can be nominated.  Recognition will be based largely and how the nominee has touched the lives of other people in their community, the scope of volunteer involvement in various community organizations, as well as the variety, quality and quantity of community service performed after age 65.  Nominees must currently do a volunteer activity that is unpaid and demonstrates commitment to their local community.

       

      Nominees will be recognized for their community service at the Brown County Fair in August.  Both a man and a woman can be selected to represent Brown County on Senior Day at the 2015 Minnesota State Fair in late August.

       

      Those wishing to make nominations can obtain official nomination forms by contacting their local Senior Citizen group or Bob Apitz at Brown County Family Service, PO Box 788, New Ulm, MN  56073 or call 507-354-8246.

      36th West Newton Day Harkin Store, Nicollet County Highway 21, New Ulm This 36th-annual event celebrates the heritage of the Minnesota settlement of West Newton, which was located halfway between New Ulm and Fort Ridgely from 1856 to 1901. View historical photos from Bob and Agnes Gleisner and read about the history of Alexander Harkin and his family, the founders of the 1870s Harkin Store. Descendants of West Newton’s earliest settlers are invited to share their stories and any old photographs. Historic site staff will copy information and photos.     1. Fireworks July 3rd – Celebration/events July 4 – Cambria (all-day)

      Cambria, MN – Members of the Cambria Community Township will celebrate the Fourth of July with a variety of programs and special events on Saturday, July 4th.

      Fireworks are scheduled for dusk – Friday, July 3 at the Cambria Town Hall.

      On Saturday, July 4th, a variety of outdoor games for young and old will kick-off the day at 11:00 am in the Cambria Park. Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share at the community pot luck picnic at the Park shelter at noon; followed by the unorganized and impromptu Annual Parade beginning on the west end of town at 1:00 pm. The Annual Patriotic Program, held in the Cambria Town Hall, will begin at 2:00 pm. Music in the Park will conclude the day’s activities at 4:00 pm. This year’s Fourth of July Program entitled, “Take Me ‘Back’ to the Ball Game,” is a one of several historic themes developed as a part of the new Cambria History Project that will highlight community activities bridging the years between elders and youngsters. This year the program will look back at the roots and historic moments of Cambria Softball. The Program will also include pre-program music, readings, performances, and will conclude with the traditional roofraising community sing-a-long, and annual Fancy Cake Auction. Funds from the program free-will-donation and Fancy Cake Auction each year support the Cambria 4th of July Program Committee Activities that continue to support the annual event and various projects that preserve the history of Cambria.

      Celebrate Independence Day the Old-Fashioned Way in Gibbon!

      The Greater Gibbon Area Uncommon Band of Renown invites you to an old-fashioned Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 3rd, in Gibbon City Park. Activities include patriotic crafts at 6 pm; a family-friendly, all-ages kickball game at 7 pm (if you can kick, you can play); a special patriotic concert at 7:15; and a children’s march at break. Great food and homemade pie will be provided by the Immanuel Lutheran Church Pioneers beginning at 6 pm. Wear your patriotic colors and spend the evening in beautiful downtown Gibbon as we celebrate America’s heritage!

    1. American Indian Survival Skills Jeffers Petroglyphs Historic Site, Comfrey MN

      Explore some of the survival skills used by early American Indians. Throughout the afternoon visitors can try to start a fire using primitive methods and view a display of atlatls (spear thrower); from 1 to 3 pm they can make an atlatl and then learn how to throw a spear at a bison target; and from 3 to 5 pm they can observe a flintknapper demonstrate how to create stone projectile points (arrowheads) and then try making one themselves.       INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION AT THE HARKIN STORE              

      On Sunday, July 5th, the historical Harkin Store will celebrate our great nation with the
      firing of a cannon.  The New Ulm Battery will start at 1:00 with the firing of the old 
      1862 cannon every half hour and on the hour.  Enjoy cold treats while listening about
      the 1870′s riverboat town of West Newton and the Harkin Store.  Bring a lawn chair 
      or blanket or sit on the porch for a relaxing afternoon.

      The program is included with the admission to the store. 

      The store is located nine miles northwest of New Ulm on Nicollet County Road 21, or  the
      bottom road, or nine miles east of Fort Ridgely.

      The Lester Prairie Lion and American Legion and Auxiliary, are hosting “Music in the Park.” It will be held on June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and July 7. This event will be held at the Park on 2nd Ave South near the swimming pool and ball fields. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of fun. The evening activities being at 6 pm with a light lunch, which is being put on by different local businesses or group each week for a small charge per person. Music begins at 7 pm and goes until 8:30 pm

      Madelia, Minn. – The Madelia Community Hospital Foundation is excited to announce that they will again be collaborating with Anderson Race Management to host a 5K Run/Walk in conjunction with the Park Days activities. Race time is at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 11th.

      The Madelia Scrub/Run Walk 5K, formerly known as the Madelia River Run, starts at the Madelia Town Hall and winds through the beautiful Watonwan River valley. The name and theme were changed this year to draw attention to our health care focus and to help raise money for an important local cause, to purchase cardiac automated external defibrillators (AED) for the Madelia Police Department.

      The Scrub Run/Walk 5K is a fun family event with a twist…. racers are encouraged to wear scrubs or dress up like a favorite medical character from real life or television, like Dr. Grey, “Hot Lips” Houlihan, Doogie Howser, M.D., etc. Participants who choose to dress up will be entered into a Best Dressed Scrubs contest. While organizers are hoping entrants will dress in medial attire, it is certainly not mandatory to do so. Scrub tops will be given to entrants that sign up for the race by June 1st.

      Registration costs for the Scrub Run/Walk 5K are as follows:

      Preregistration (before 6/1): $20, Registration (after 6/1): $25, Race Day: $30

      Sign In and Onsite Registration will take place on July 11th from 7:45 – 8:45 a.m.

      Everyone is invited – runners, walkers, families with strollers, and spectators. Entries may be individual or team. Business can sponsor a team, and some businesses even have team shirts (or maybe scrubs?) made for participants. In addition to the Best Dressed Scrubs Contest, race medals will also be awarded for: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place (by age group), Team with the Most Participants, Fastest Team.

      We are also looking for Race Sponsors for the Madelia Scrub Run/Walk 5K. Sponsorships offset the expense of having the race, and will help us raise funds for the AEDs that the Madelia Police Department is hoping to purchase. Donations of $200 or more will be recognized at the event.

      Come buy a Blizzard any time on Tuesday, July 14 2015 at the New Ulm Dairy Queen and a portion of the amount you pay for your blizzard will go to fund Pro Kinship for Kids activities.  You will be able to enjoy a great treat and support Pro Kinship at the same time.  Bring your friends, family, or your whole neighborhood for fun!!!

      You can also bring your children or neighborhood children down to Dairy Queen this day for a real feel for what it is like to be part of Pro Kinship for Kids.  Staff and volunteers of Pro Kinship will be available to answer questions, and tell you about the program.  You can experience Pro Kinship activities from 4 – 7:30.  For donations to Pro Kinship for Kids children or any one who is a child at heart can make different craft items to take home with them and play games with us.  Here are just a few things you can do this day:

      The New Ulm American Legion and KNUJ/SAM are the primary sponsors for this years Bavarian Blast 5K – 10K run/walk, to be held Saturday, July 18th.   The race will begin at 9 am from the New Ulm Civic Center.

      Pre-registration can be done on line at www.itsyourrace.com .   Pre-registration participating fee is $25, and if done prior to July 5th, a run/walk T-Shirt is guaranteed.   Registration can also be done beginning at 8 am the day of the event for a $30 fee.

      Teams of five or more are encouraged, and if registered by July 5th, they will get their own personal color team shirt. 

      Proceeds from the event will go towards New Ulm American Legion Community Youth projects.
