    1. Skywarn Spotter Training to be Held
      6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Skywarn Spotter Training to be Held

Blue Earth County, Nicollet County and the National Weather Service will host Skywarn Spotter Training onThurs., April 9, 2015 at 6 p.m. The training will take place at South Central College in North Mankato and is open to all interested parties.  There is no charge for the training and d pre-registration is not required.

This course will teach the basic skills necessary to become a weather spotter.  Storm spotters help their communities by participating in an organized effort to watch for approaching storms and warn of the formation of tornadoes or other threatening severe weather.  Even with the use of Doppler radar equipment, there is a need for spotters in the field.  Radar can only detect the parent circulation that spawns tornadoes and information is needed about whether tornadoes are actually being produced and to detect their precise location.

For additional information, please contact either Blue Earth County Emergency Management at (507) 304-4806 or Nicollet County Emergency Management at (507) 934-7872.

A partnership between St. Peter Community and Family Education and the Nicollet County Historical Society, films are screened every month at the Treaty Site History Center, September through May. Cox House Short Film Series

The Cox House Short Film Series shines a light on the life in the Victorian Midwest during the late 1800s. Using archival photos and documents from around the region, as well as the “living archive” of the E. St. Julien Cox House museum, these short films share the experiences of local people in the context of pressing issues of the day, including the roles of women, life as a child, disease and death, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, and really wide streets! The Cox House Short Films are student films created in a collaboration between the Department of Communication Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College and the Nicollet County Historical Society.

Gustavus students and Martin Lang, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, will be on hand to discuss the experience of producing these short films.

The Treaty Site History Center features a national award-winning exhibit on the Traverse des Sioux Treaty of 1851 and its consequences, as well as local history, and a full-service research archive. Please contact the Society at 507-934-2160 or museum@nchsmn.org for more details.

Admission to the film series is free for all. The Treaty Site History Center is located one mile north of downtown Saint Peter at Highways 169 and 22, across from the Mankato Clinic.
