      There’s a Christmas gifts you can give that can’t be found in stores – the Gift of Life.

      The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be making several stops around the area this week to allow you to help hospital patients in need this holiday season.

      December 26 – Gaylord American Legion from 1-7pm

      Schell’s Brewery in New Ulm will be having their Christmas Candle Luminaries on Christmas Eve from 6:30-10pm and Christmas night from 5:30pm until they burn out.

      Fitness Fun Day at the Rec. Center in New Ulm on Friday, December 27, from 6-9pm.

      Rec. Center will be open, free of charge for individuals and families to swim, play basketball, gym games or walk the track.

      Program sponsored by New Ulm Park and Rec., Allina Health-New Ulm Medical Center and Physicians Group of New Ulm.

    1. No Heartland Express Service on New Year’s Day
      12:00 pm – 11:45 pm

      The Brown County Heartland Express will not be operating and the office will be closed on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1. Service will resume on Thursday, January 2, as usual.

      Please note that the Heartland Express will only be operating until 3pm on New Year’s Eve Day, Tuesday, December 31.

      Those needing transportation on Thursday, January 2, are asked to call the Heartland Express Office no later than 3pm on Tuesday, December 31, to make arrangements for your rides. Call 359-2717 or countywide toll free at 800-707-2717.

    1. U of M Extension to Offer The Buzz of Bees
      5:30 pm – 9:00 pm

      Make plans now to attend “The Buzz of Bees”, an educational evening on Tuesday, January 7, at the Ney Nature Center in Henderson offered through the University of Minnesota Extension in Nicollet, Sibley and LeSueur Counties. 

      Come and learn about Minnesota’s bee population and what you can do to help it thrive. The evening will begin with a food/drink reception at 5:30pm. Beginning at 6pm, Becky Mastermann and Elaine Evans from the U of M’s Bee Squad, will present on topics including native bees, colony collapse disorder, bee friendly plants, honey and beekeeping. The evening will conclude by 9pm. There will be time for questions and discussion.

    1. Youth Snowmobile Safety Training, Olivia
      9:00 am – 12:00 pm

      The Renville County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be hosting a Youth Snowmobile Safety Training course on January 11, beginning at 9am, at the Renville County Office Building, 105 5th Street South, Room 117-lower level, Olivia.

      Pre-registration is required and students must meet the following requirements:

      -be at least 12 years of age
      -be accompanied by parent or guardian
      -have your own snowmobile and proper safety gear
      -successful completion of the Minnesota DNR Safety CD and printout of the Certificate of Completion. The Safety CD can be obtained by calling 888-646-6367 or 651-296-6157.

      Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, Inc. Parade of Bands Fundraiser & Concertina Jamboree will be held Sunday, January 12, 12-6pm, Park Ballroom, New Prague.

      Food and beverages available. Entertainment: 12-1pm Czech Area Concertina Club; 1:10-2:40pm Charlie Sticha Band; 2:50-4:20pm The Revival Band; 4:30-6pm Wendinger Band. Bands are subject to change.

      Concertina Jamboree 1pm in the Ballroom Meeting Room. Nancy Buckentine, Master of Ceremonies & Nancy Brooks, registrations. Featuring Bob Pexa and Steve Moran and friends on drums and tuba.

      St. John’s Catholic Church in Hector is having their annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, January 19. The men of our parish will be serving at the American Bar and Grill (formerly the American Legion) in Hector from 9am-1pm.

      The menu includes pancakes, French toast, ham and eggs, applesauce and beverage. Cost is $6/adults; $3/children 5-10; and free for children 4 and under.

      Presented by the MN Historical Society and Schell’s Brewing Co. Minnesota Beer and Brewing History on Tuesday, January 21, 7pm at the Gaylord Library. 

      Learn about MN’s rich brewing tradition and enjoy free beer sampling provided by Schell’s. Remember to sign up for the Winter Reading Program starting January 21.

      The New Ulm Sons of American Legion are presenting Homemade Roast Beef or Turkey Commercials on Wednesday, January 22, from 5-7:30pm or until gone at the New Ulm American Legion Clubroom.

      Full or half orders will be available, as well as milk, coffee or water. The cost is $6.75 for a full order and $4.25 for a half order.

    1. Snowmobile Safety Class, St. James
      8:00 am – 4:00 pm

      The Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring the following Snowmobile Safety Class on January 25, from 8am-4pm at the Watonwan Public Library, 125 5th Street South, St. James. 

      Youth must be 11 years of age before the class start date in order to be eligible to take the class. Pre-registration is required by obtaining a study cd before 1-25-14 by calling 507-375-2579. Class size is limited, so register early.

    2. Community Family Fun Night, New Ulm
      4:30 pm – 9:00 pm

      Community Family Fun Night – Escape the Winter Blues on Saturday, January 25, at Holy Trinity Gym, 515 North State, New Ulm for Food, Games and Talent Show. Food served 4:30-6:45pm; Games from 5-6:45pm; Talent Show 6:30pm. Admission for the talent show is $5/adults; $3/students with a family cap of $15.

      There will be a Carnival of Games including Kid’s Raffle; Surprise Door Game; Plunk-It; Fish Pond; Bean Bag Toss; Cherry Tree; Face Painting; Bingo; Food featuring tacos in a bag, chicken strips, bbq pork, Happy Joe’s pizza and more.
