    1. New Ulm Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Banqet
      6:45 pm – 7:45 pm

      The New Ulm Sertoma Club’s Annual Service to Mankind Banquet honoring Carl “Red” Wyczawski will be held Thursday, May 16, at the New Ulm Country Club. Social hour begins at 6pm with dinner and the banquet at 6:45pm. Tickets are available at the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce, HyVee or Cash Wise.

      Huge 20-family Garage Sale starting May 17 through June 1. It is located at 35227 290th St., Henderson – West of Henderson from Hwy 19 onto County Rd. 62.

      Baby clothing, adult clothing, household items, furniture, shoes, household appliances, greenhouse bedding plants, hanging baskets.

    2. Gopher Road Trip Chalk Talk 2013
      10:00 am – 1:00 pm

      Gopher Road Trip Chalk Talk 2013 – Join your Director of Athletics Norwood Teague, select Gopher head coaches, staff and Goldy as they travel across the state of Minnesota. Proudly wear your maroon and gold to support the Gophers as they visit your community.

      The Gophers will be visiting the community on the following dates:

      Redwood Falls, May 16; Jackson, May 16; Mankato, June 17; New Ulm, May 17

      The Gophers will be arriving at Turner Hall, 102 South State, New Ulm at 10am. Social Time begins at 11am and will be over at 1pm.

    1. Hanska Women of Today ‘UFF DA 5K Walk/Run”
      8:00 am – 9:00 am

      Join the Hanska Women of Today and the United Way of Brown County as they walk and run to help the Imagination Library and Youth Activities Scholarship Programs.

      The Hanska “UFF DA Just for Fun Walk and Run” will be held on Saturday, May 18, at the Hanska City Park. Forms are available at the Hanska City Office or you can register the day of the race, starting at 8am.

      There will also be a kids walk and fun at 10:30am and the Hanska City Park.

    2. Winthrop City Wide Garage Sales
      8:00 am – 2:00 pm

      Winthrop City Wide Garage Sales, Saturday, May 18, 8am-2pm. Maps available at local businesses.

    3. Tri-County Household Hazardous Waste Collection
      9:00 am – 2:00 pm

      The Tri-County Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be at the City of St. Peter located at 400 West St. Julien Street on Saturday, May 18 from 9am-2pm. This is for residents in LeSueur, Sibley and Nicollet Counties only!

      No business waste or used motor oil will be accepted. Call Tri-County Solid Waste at 507-381-9196 for more information.

      Come and have fun and dance at the MMHF Fundraiser on Sunday, May 19, 12-6pm at Turner Hall in New Ulm.

      Braun & Borth Electronics and Appliance Recycling Day will be held Wednesday, May 22, 12-6pm at the Sleepy Eye Baseball Parking Lot.

    2. Retirement Party for Harold Remme
      3:30 pm – 7:00 pm

      You are invited to a retirement party in honor of Harold Remme, Superintendent, on Wednesday, May 22 from 3:30pm-7:00pm at New Ulm High School. There will be a program at 5:30pm.

    1. Sibley East Elementary School Carnival
      5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

      The Sibley East Elementary School Carnival is Thursday, May 23, at the Gaylord Campus from 5-7pm. Admission to the carnival is free. There is a large variety of games and a number of delicious food items. A silent auction will be from 12-6:30pm. There is also a grand prize drawing for a IPad Mini.

      The funds raised will be used to purchase technology and recess equipment to be in classrooms in both Gaylord and Arlington.

    1. New Ulm Chamber of Commerce hours
      8:00 am – 5:00 pm

      The New Ulm Chamber of Commerce / Visitor Center will be open Friday, 5/24 from 8a-5p and on Saturday, 5/25 from 10a-3p. They will be closed Monday, 5/27 for the Memorial Day holiday.

    1. NCHS Cox House plant sale
      8:30 am – 2:00 pm

      The Nicollet County Historical Society’s annual heritage plant sale to benefit the Cox House will be held on Saturday, 5/25 from 8:30a-2:00p. The event is at the Treaty Site History Center at 1851 N Minnesota Ave in St. Peter.

      Locally-grown perennials and bulbs available in the past have included mums, phlox, primrose, ferns, bleeding hearts, daisies, lilies, dahlias, lily of the valley, raspberry canes, rhubarb, coleus, and more.

    2. Lake Hanska Youth Fishing Derby
      9:00 am – 1:00 pm

      The Lake Hanska Youth Fishing Derby is Saturday, May 25, from 9am-1pm at the south landing on Lake Hanska.

      Pro walleye fisherman Tommy Skarlis will be the MC.

    1. Brown County Heartland Express – weekend (all-day)
      May 26 – May 27

      The Brown County Heartland Express will not be operating on Sunday, 5/26 and Monday, 5/27 in observance of Memorial Day. Regular transit service will resume on Tuesday, 5/28.

      The transit office will also be closed on Monday, 5/27. To schedule rides for Tuesday, 5/28, patrons need to call the office no later than 3pm on Friday, 5/24 at 359-2717 or 800-707-2717.

    2. Fort Ridgely program and tour
      1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

      On Sunday, May 26, Historian John LaBatte will present a program at 1pm on the causes of the U.S.-Dakota War in 1862. Then at 2:30pm there will be a walking tour of Fort Ridgely. $4 admission, MHS and NCHS members free.

      May 27

      All Brown County offices will be closed on Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.

    2. New Ulm Memorial Day events
      9:00 am – 10:00 am

      The New Ulm Memorial Day Parade on Monday, 5/27 starts at 9am. The parade forms between 5th and 7th South by St. Mary’s and proceeds north on German St. to 5th North and Minnesota.

      The observance at the cemetery will begin at 10am. In case of rain, the services will be held at the Civic Center.

    3. Plato Memorial Day service
      9:00 pm – 10:00 pm

      The Plato American Legion will hold a Memorial Day service on Monday, 5/27 at 9am at the Plato Community Hall. The Memorial Day address will be given by Captain David Smith.

    1. Brown County Outstanding Seniors (all-day)
      Jun 1

      Nominations are now being accepted through the month of June for the Brown County Outstanding Senior Citizen recognition for 2013.

      Seniors who have reached the age of 70 by June 1 of this year can be nominated. Recognition will be based largely on how the nominee has touched the lives of other people in their community, the scope of volunteer involvement in various community organizations, as well as the variety, quality and quantity of community service performed after age 65.

      Those wishing to make nominations can obtain official forms by contacting their local Senior Citizen Group or Bob Apitz at Brown Co. Family Service, PO Box 788, New Ulm, MN 56073.

      Featuring music from the Lafayette City Band. Homemade ‘Bake Sale’ specialties of the Bernadotte Ladies.

    2. ‘A Night of Christian Music for Missions IV’ at MLC
      7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

      ‘A Night of Christian Music for Missions IV’ will be held on Wednesday, June 5, in the Martin Luther College Auditorium at 7pm, sponsored by MN Valley Chapter of Kingdom Workers.

      Performers include the Branches Band ( a Christian vocal group from Milwaukee), the Mankato Area Chorale and area youth instrumentalists.

      Light refreshments will follow and a free will offering will be gathered to be used toward Kingdom Worker projects. Supplemental funding provided through a partnership with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans New Ulm Chapter.

    3. New Ulm Municipal Band
      7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

      New Ulm Municipal Band will play in German Park in New Ulm for an Outdoor Concert this summer. They play marches, old standards, Broadway melodies, patriotic songs, music from Germany and more.

    2. Documentary Film Series at Treaty Site Center

      Please join us for this month’s documentary film, Garbo the Spy, at 7pm Thursday, June 6, at the Treaty Site History Center in St. Peter.

      In this documentary thriller, director Edmon Roch artfully interweaves propaganda footage, interviews with intelligence experts and key players in Garbo’s life and clips from Hollywood films to conjure forgotten and living memories, heroes and spies, secrets and lies.

      Admission to the film series is free. The Treaty Site History Center is located one mile north of downtown St. Peter at Highways 169 and 22, across from the Mankato Clinic.
