      11:00 am – 1:00 pm

      Polka Worship and German Dinner on Sunday, April 14, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Stewart.

      Worship: 10am, featuring the Wendinger Band. Dinner: 11am-1pm. Menu: German potato salad or scalloped potatoes, brats and meatballs, glazed carrots, German sauerkraut, bread bars, coffee, milk, water.

      Free will donation. Proceeds will be used to replace windowns and two exterior doors. Supplemental funds provided by Thrivent Chapter 30090.

    3. St. James Sertoma Presents ‘The Sound of Music
      2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

      St. James Sertoma presents ‘The Sound of Music’ on Sunday, April 14, at 2pm, St. James Presbyterian Church Social Hall. Free will donation. Proceeds go to St. James Mayo Audiology.

    4. Perfect Pairings Fundraiser, New Ulm
      5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

      United Way of the Brown County Area and Schell’s Brewery Co. Present ‘Perfect Pairings’, Dinner & Beer & Silent Auction on Sunday, April 14, Turner Hall, 102 South State, New Ulm. 5:30pm social time with dinner beginning promptly at 6pm.

      $40 per guest. Reserve your tickets by calling 507-354-6512 or stop by the United Way office, 622 Center Street. Proceeds will benefit Brown County United Way’s Youth Activities Scholarship Program. Welcome beer will be served 5:30-6pm.

      Sunday, April 21 – Bird and Animal Sway and Sell Day at the Brown County Fairgrounds, New Ulm. Buy, sell, trade poultry, fancy pigeons, ornamental game birds equipment, etc.

      The Comfrey Lions Club will be having their Annual Pancake Brunch on Sunday, April 21, at the Comfrey Community Center from 10am-12:30pm.

      There will be a Pork Chop Dinner on Sunday, April 21, serving 11am-1pm, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Courtland (located 3 miles east of Courtland on County Road 25).

      One chop/$9; two chops/$12; hot dog/$3. Menu: pork chops or hot dog; German potato salad; corn; buns; ice cream; beverages. Dine in or take out.

      The May play reading will be “The Skin of Our Teeth!” by Thornton Wilder on Tuesday, May 14, 7pm at The Lind House in New Ulm, 622 Center Street.

      This play begins at 7pm sharp and commemorates the one year anniversary of the Society.

      Gopher Road Trip Chalk Talk 2013 – Join your Director of Athletics Norwood Teague, select Gopher head coaches, staff and Goldy as they travel across the state of Minnesota. Proudly wear your maroon and gold to support the Gophers as they visit your community.

      The Gophers will be visiting the community on the following dates:

      The Gophers will be arriving at Turner Hall, 102 South State, New Ulm at 10am. Social Time begins at 11am and will be over at 1pm.

    1. Hanska Women of Today ‘UFF DA 5K Walk/Run”

      Join the Hanska Women of Today and the United Way of Brown County as they walk and run to help the Imagination Library and Youth Activities Scholarship Programs.

      The Hanska “UFF DA Just for Fun Walk and Run” will be held on Saturday, May 18, at the Hanska City Park. Forms are available at the Hanska City Office or you can register the day of the race, starting at 8am.

      There will also be a kids walk and fun at 10:30am and the Hanska City Park.

    3. Tri-County Household Hazardous Waste Collection
      9:00 am – 2:00 pm

      The Tri-County Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be at the City of St. Peter located at 400 West St. Julien Street on Saturday, May 18 from 9am-2pm. This is for residents in LeSueur, Sibley and Nicollet Counties only!

      No business waste or used motor oil will be accepted. Call Tri-County Solid Waste at 507-381-9196 for more information.

    1. Sibley East Elementary School Carnival
      5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

      The Sibley East Elementary School Carnival is Thursday, May 23, at the Gaylord Campus from 5-7pm. Admission to the carnival is free. There is a large variety of games and a number of delicious food items. A silent auction will be from 12-6:30pm. There is also a grand prize drawing for a IPad Mini.

      The funds raised will be used to purchase technology and recess equipment to be in classrooms in both Gaylord and Arlington.

      The New Ulm Chamber of Commerce / Visitor Center will be open Friday, 5/24 from 8a-5p and on Saturday, 5/25 from 10a-3p. They will be closed Monday, 5/27 for the Memorial Day holiday.

    1. NCHS Cox House plant sale
      8:30 am – 2:00 pm

      The Nicollet County Historical Society’s annual heritage plant sale to benefit the Cox House will be held on Saturday, 5/25 from 8:30a-2:00p. The event is at the Treaty Site History Center at 1851 N Minnesota Ave in St. Peter.

      Locally-grown perennials and bulbs available in the past have included mums, phlox, primrose, ferns, bleeding hearts, daisies, lilies, dahlias, lily of the valley, raspberry canes, rhubarb, coleus, and more.

    1. Brown County Heartland Express – weekend (all-day)
      May 26 – May 27

      The Brown County Heartland Express will not be operating on Sunday, 5/26 and Monday, 5/27 in observance of Memorial Day. Regular transit service will resume on Tuesday, 5/28.

      The transit office will also be closed on Monday, 5/27. To schedule rides for Tuesday, 5/28, patrons need to call the office no later than 3pm on Friday, 5/24 at 359-2717 or 800-707-2717.

    2. Fort Ridgely program and tour
      1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

      On Sunday, May 26, Historian John LaBatte will present a program at 1pm on the causes of the U.S.-Dakota War in 1862. Then at 2:30pm there will be a walking tour of Fort Ridgely. $4 admission, MHS and NCHS members free.

      May 27

      All Brown County offices will be closed on Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.

    2. New Ulm Memorial Day events
      9:00 am – 10:00 am

      The New Ulm Memorial Day Parade on Monday, 5/27 starts at 9am. The parade forms between 5th and 7th South by St. Mary’s and proceeds north on German St. to 5th North and Minnesota.

      The observance at the cemetery will begin at 10am. In case of rain, the services will be held at the Civic Center.

    3. Plato Memorial Day service
      9:00 pm – 10:00 pm

      The Plato American Legion will hold a Memorial Day service on Monday, 5/27 at 9am at the Plato Community Hall. The Memorial Day address will be given by Captain David Smith.

    1. Brown County Outstanding Seniors (all-day)

      Nominations are now being accepted through the month of June for the Brown County Outstanding Senior Citizen recognition for 2013.

      Seniors who have reached the age of 70 by June 1 of this year can be nominated. Recognition will be based largely on how the nominee has touched the lives of other people in their community, the scope of volunteer involvement in various community organizations, as well as the variety, quality and quantity of community service performed after age 65.

      Those wishing to make nominations can obtain official forms by contacting their local Senior Citizen Group or Bob Apitz at Brown Co. Family Service, PO Box 788, New Ulm, MN 56073.
