    1. Scouting for Food Drive (all-day)
      Mar 16 – Mar 23

      The Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts in New Ulm will have their annual Scouting for Food Drive to help fill shelves at the New Ulm Emergency Food Shelf.

      The house-to-house pickup of food will take place Saturday, March 23, starting at 8:30am. Between March 16 and 20, the Scouts will deliver plastic bags to all houses in New Ulm as a reminder for residents to remember the food shelf drive.

      Residents who will not be home on March 23, may leave their food donation at local churches or in the food shelf boxes at HyVee or Cash Wise. Also, the local Curves for Women business will collect donations.

      These are items most in need of: peas, canned carrots, mixed vegetables, chicken noodle soup, bathroom tissue, boxes potatoes, instant oatmeal, chicken helper, tuna helper and macaroni and cheese.

    4. Women’s History Luncheon, New Ulm
      12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

      The Women’s History Luncheon will be held Saturday, March 16 at Turner Hall in New Ulm at 12pm. Tickets are $12 available at BCHS

      Honoring Brown County women who have provided medical services to impoverished areas. The speaker will be Dr. Laurel Gamm and the topic is: ‘Serving with Doctors without Borders’.

    1. Lafayette Area Lions Fundraiser
      9:00 am – 1:00 pm

      Lafayette Area Lions Pancake and Waffle Breakfast Fundraiser will be Sunday, March 17, 9am-1pm at the Lafayette Community Center.

      Serving pancakes, waffles with toppings, scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, juice, milk and coffee. Adults/$7; ages 6-12/$4; under 6/$1.

      Proceeds go toward scholarships for post-secondary students from the Lafayette area.

    2. Hanska Fire Department Waffle Breakfast
      9:00 am – 1:00 pm

      The Hanska Fire Department will be having a Waffle Breakfast with Hanska’s special sausages on Sunday, March 17, from 9am-1pm at the Hanska Community Center.

      All you can eat Dad’s Belgian Waffles is just &8 per person and children 5 and under are free. Take outs and in town delivery is available.

      All proceeds will go to the Hanska Fire Department Relief Association and fire department training.

    3. Darfur Fireman’s Relief Association Brunch
      10:00 am – 1:00 pm

      The Darfur Fireman’s Relief Association will hold a brunch on Sunday, March 17, from 10am-1pm at the Darfur Hall in Darfur.

      Meal includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and a beverage. $7/adults; $3/children 3-12; children under 3/free.

    4. New Ulm/Sleepy Eye Hockey Sauerkraut and Landjaeger Dinner
      10:30 am – 1:30 pm

      The New Ulm/Sleepy Eye Hockey Association will be hosting their annual Sauerkraut and Landjaeger Dinner on Sunday, March 17, at Turner Hall in New Ulm, from 10:30am-1:30pm.

      Tickets are $10/adults; kids 10 and under/$5. Take out orders available.

      Enjoy a great meal and help support the New Ulm/Sleepy Eye Hockey Association.

    5. Grocery Bingo, Lafayette
      1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

      St. Gregory the Great Church CCW is hosting Grocery Bingo on Sunday, March 17, at 1pm at St. Gregory the Great Church Social Hall, Lafayette.

      Donations will be accepted for the local food shelf.

    6. St. Patrick’s Day Parade, New Ulm
      5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

      The smell of corned beef and soda bread is in the air and that can only mean one. It’s time to gear up for New Ulm’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The parade will take place on Sunday, March 17, and will step off at 5pm. This is the 48th year of the parade, making it the longest consecutive Irish parade event in the state.

      The parade route will begin at 3rd South and Minnesota Streets and proceed the wrong way up Minnesota to its conclusion at the Glockenspiel. The parade will immediately be followed by teh Gathering of the Clans Banquet at Don’s Pub (knows the rest of the year at the Kaiserhoff Restaurant) with entertainment by New Ulm’s Good Will Ambassadors, the O’Concord Singers, performing traditional Irish tunes.

    1. Snowmobilie Youth Safety Class, St. James
      8:00 am – 5:00 pm

      The Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring a Snowmobile Youth Safety Class on Saturday, March 23, 8am-5pm, at the St. James Library, 125 5th Street South, St. James.

      Youth must be 11 years of age before the class start date in order to be eligible to take the class. Pre-registration is required by obtaining a study cd before March 23 by calling 507-375-2579.

      Oak Hills Auxiliary Spring Bazaar, Bake Sale and Easter Egg Hunt will take Saturday, March 23, from 9-11am at Oak Hills Living Center.

      Bring your camera for pictures with the Easter Bunny. Monetary donations, baked goods and craft items are welcome by 8am Saturday. Proceeds will be for the benefit of the residents of Oak Hills.

      The Springfield High School YES Team is sponsoring a collection of used blue jeans from April 1 to April 19. The blue jeans will be made into insulation that helps save energy in homes.

      Drop boxes are location in the High School, Elementary School and District offices, as well as Tauer’s.

      Jake’s Pizza is holding a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of South Central MN with an all-you-can-eat pizza event. The event will take place at Jake’s Pizza at 408 1st Avenue in St. James from 5-7:30pm on Tuesday, April 9. Tickets $9.

      Silent auction ends at 7pm. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity Build in St. James.

    4. Putting Green Community Garden
      7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

      Putting Green, along with the Heart of New Ulm Project, is excited to announce a new addition to the landscape, New Ulm’s Community Garden at Putting Green EcoCenter, corner of 20th S and Valley. Information and sign up meeting will be held Tuesday, April 9, at 7pm in the basement of the library.

      A community garden is a place where neighbors and families gather to grow healthy delicious food. Each person will have their own plot to grow their own herbs, flowers, fruit or vegetables. Sign up to be a community gardener on Tuesday, April 9, at the library. If you can’t make it to the meeting, call Tracie at 507-276-1958 to sign up or for more details. There will be a limited number of plots available for the season and are $35 per plot per season.

    2. Fundraiser for Hannah’s Gamble Family, Mankato
      5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

      The Mankato Marine Corps League and Auxiliary will be hosting a Burger Basket Buffet on Friday, April 12, at the Morson-Ario VFW, 1900 N Riverfront Dr, Mankato, MN from 5-8pm. This fundraiser is for the family of Hannah Gamble.

      Hannah was killed in a car accident on January 16. They will be raising funds to help her family pay for funeral and travel expenses they incured. Hannah’s father Richard is an Iraqi Veteran serving with the Army Reserve. There will also be a silent auction. Price will be $6 per plates includes burgers, fixin’s and fries.

      There will be a benefit for Easton True on Saturday, April 13, New Ulm Country Club, 4-8pm; food served 5-7pm. There will be a bake sale; silent auction; free will donation.

      Parents of Easton are Jeff and April Schneider-True; Grandparents are Tim and Jean Schneider; Great-Grandparents are Joe and Audrey Schneider and Howard and Lois Hoffmann. Easton True was born 8 weeks premature on 11/16/12. He was taken to Rochester Mayo Clinic NICU for oxygen support and was making steady progress. On day 8 of Easton’s life, he had an unexplained Grade IV Intraventricular Hemorrhage which lead to nonstop seizures and hydrocephalus. He had an emergency operation on 11/25/12 which saved his life. He has beaten all odds of surviving and an EEG showed normal brain activity for a premature baby. Easton continues to show everyone his strength and sweet personality daily.
