Vike’s Sign 3 Draft Picks

The Vikings signed three draft picks to four-year contracts Wednesday. Punter Jeff Locke and offensive lineman Jeff Baca, both from UCLA, agreed to terms. So did seventh-round pick Travis Bond, an offensive lineman from North Carolina. Locke was a fifth-round choice and Baca was a sixth-round selection. Only the team’s three first-round picks remain to be signed.

The Vikings have signed three of their nine 2013 draft picks. The team inked linebackers Gerald Hodges and Michael Mauti and defensive tackle Everett Dawkins. Hodges was a fourth round selection, while Mauti and Dawkins were both taken in the seventh round.

Vikes Release New Stadium Design

The Minnesota Vikings have released the design of their new 975-million-dollar multi-purpose stadium. The design package will now be submitted to the Minneapolis Stadium Implementation Committee and the city of Minneapolis for review. The stadium features the largest transparent roof in the world and operable doors to the downtown skyline. The clear roof will be permanent and will allow natural sunshine into most areas of the stadium. The new venue will be capable of hosting baseball, basketball, soccer games, and more. Groundbreaking for the new 65-thousand seat stadium will begin in October with a scheduled opening in time for the 2016 NFL season. The Vikings recently reached a deal with the University of Minnesota to play in TCF Bank Stadium for the 2014 and 2015 seasons during construction.

Vikings OTAs Later In Month

The Vikings will host Organized Team Activities later this month at Winter Park. Every NFL team can ask its players to take part in ten such days of organized off-season training, although they are not mandatory workouts. The first set of three OTA’s are scheduled for May 28-30 before seven more are set for the month of June. The team’s mandatory mini-camp is slated for June 18-20.

Dayton Looking for New Revenue Source for Stadium

The Dayton administration is working on a new revenue source to pay the state’s portion of a new Vikings stadium — but the governor won’t say what it is, because he “wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.” The governor says sports memorabilia is “not currently” part of the proposal to back-up faltering e-pulltab revenues, nor would the Vikings have to kick in more money. Republican Senator Sean Nienow [[ NEE'-noe ]] says he has no idea what the new revenue source is — but it has to be something like shifting funds around or creating a new lottery game. Nienow adds it has to be a permanent solution because a fund shift for one year is “not gonna get us there.”

The Vikings will reportedly play at TCF Bank Stadium in 2014 and 2015 while their new stadium is built on the old Metrodome site. The Vikings and Golden Gophers have reached a facility use agreement and the University of Minnesota Board of Regents will vote on the matter today.

Rookie Mini Camp Ends

The Minnesota Vikings rookies took the the field for the first time in their NFL careers over the weekend. Among those to hit the gridiron were first-round draft choices Sharrif [[ shuh-REEF ]] Floyd, Xavier Rhodes, and Coredarrelle [[ KOR-dare-uhl ]] Patterson. Duron Carter, the son of Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter, also took part. Former Golden Gopher linebacker Keanon Cooper was part of the minicamp, as well.

Vikings Draft Nine Players

The Vikings picked up nine players in the NFL Draft over the weekend and signed another 16 undrafted rookies. After trading up to get three first rounders on Thursday, the Vikings didn’t have a pick in the second or third rounds on Friday. They chose linebacker Gerald Hodges in the fourth round Saturday, as well as punter Jeff Locke in round five.

The Vikings continue the NFL Draft today in New York. After picking three players in the first round on Thursday, Minnesota had no picks in round two or three yesterday. The Vikes are slated to make five selections today with the first one in the fourth round at 120th overall. Minnesota also has a pick in the fifth and six, as well as two in the seventh.

NFL Draft, Viking Party Tonight

Tonight is a night Minnesota Vikings fans have been waiting for since the season ended in January. It is NFL Draft Night and, for now, the Purple will have two first-round selections. Minnesota owns the No. 23 and No. 25 overall choices in the opening round. General manager Rick Spielman says there is enough depth in the draft that he foresees the team getting quality players at both spots. Team needs include linebacker, wide receiver, defensive back and defensive tackle, among other positions.

Hundreds of Vikings fans will gather tonight at the Metrodome for the team’s NFL Draft Party. Fans will find former Vikings who will sign autographs at the party, as well as indoor games, food and beverage, sponsor booths and other things. The highlight of the party is slated to be the unveiling of the new Vikings uniforms for the coming season. Vikings general manager Rick Spielman talked about the upcoming NFL Draft yesterday. Spielman says he doesn’t see the team moving up in the first round, which is tomorrow night. He also said they feel they can move down and get the same quality of player and accumulate more picks for this year or next. Currently, the Vikings own the No. 23 and No. 25 overall selections in the opening round. Rounds Two and Three are set for Friday, followed by Rounds Four through Seven on Saturday.

The Vikings continue to prepare for this week’s NFL Draft. Minnesota has the 23rd and 25th overall picks in Thursday’s first round. The second and third rounds are Friday with the final three rounds on Saturday. The Vikings have 11 picks in all, including two fourth rounders and three seventh round selections.
