KNUJ’s Hometown Hero for the Month of April is Marvin Stueber of New Ulm. Along with being very active with his church and the Catholic Order of Foresters, Stueber is always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family. That includes mowing lawns, plowing snow, fixing tractors and other machinery, and baling hay. There have been many snowy days in which Marvin searches for people stuck in the snow that need help as well. Doris is actively involved in numerous organizations in her community, volunteering with the local hospital, as well as Hospice, blood drives, the food shelf, the historical society and the Friends of the Library. The 86-year-old is also very active with her church, and regularly visits nursing homes and shut-ins. KNUJ’s Hometown Heroes for the Month of October are 2 local-area men who rescued a Nebraska man from a burning vehicle near Comfrey recently. Nick Rients of rural Comfrey and Stetson Shoen of Springfield were working in nearby fields when the accident occurred the afternoon of September 30th. The 74-year-old driver had lost control of his van and it went into the ditch and began to burn. Rients and Shoen attempted to extinguish the flames before freeing the man from the vehicle by cutting his seatbelt and moving him to a safe location. The 2 were presented “Citizen Achievement” certificates from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office for their actions. KNUJ’s Hometown Hero for the month of September is Myron “Whitey” Helget of Sleepy Eye. Whitey was reportedly instrumental in beginning the Leavenworth Softball Team and concession stand, and has volunteered many hours of his time to the organization for decades. He is also said to be a favorite with the students among bus drivers, and shares many of the vegetables from his garden with his friends and neighbors. KNUJ’s Hometown Hero for the month of August is Kay Schumacher of Arlington for her dedication to her community. Schumacher has volunteered for countless committees and organizations over the years. She has been a member of the Sibley Medical Center Foundation Board and Auxiliary for over a decade, as well as the Sibley County Relay For Life Committee. She serves on many Arlington Chamber of Commerce committees, including for the annual Town and Country Days, volunteers her time at the county fair every year, has led a Youth Group on a Mission Trip to a southern state to help the poor, is the Chair of the local Blood Bank, is active with her church, and much more. KNUJ’s Hometown Hero for the month of July is Allyson Blickem of New Ulm. Allyson was on a weekend campout at Lake Hanska County Park when she saved a man’s life by giving him the Heimlich Maneuver. She is also a member of the Emergency Response Team and Diversity Team at Kraft in New Ulm, and volunteers for the United Way Day of Caring every year. KNUJ’s Hometown Hero for the month of June is Nicollet School Daycare Provider Amy Broring. She was recently honored by the Nicollet School Board for saving the life of a 1-year-old child. Broring was reportedly holding the infant when she noticed that the child had stopped breathing. Her training then kicked in, and she was able to revive the infant.
