– The Bird Island Post Office was honored in 2008 with the Superior Performance Award for fiscal year 2007. The award recognizes significant contributions on overall performance and leadership.
– Mary Erickson of Bird Island won over $36,000 in the Minnesota Lottery’s “Nothstar Cash” game in 2008.
– Ann Johnson of Bird Island published a children’s book in 2008. Ann Johnson is the author of “Ever Heard Of Us?”, a collection of stories discovering unique animals around the world for kids ages 7-12.
–BOLD High School crowned Torrie Jordan as 2008 Homecoming Queen and Homecoming King was Sam Steffel.
– BOLD High School Senior Jacob Walter came in 2nd place in the 2008 National Josten’s Photo Contest with his photo titled “Drifter”.
– The Bird Island City Council made a commitment in 2008 to renovate the city’s ballpark. Several updates are being planned for the park in anticipation of Bird Island hosting the 2010 Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament.
– The Ziller Seed Company based out of Bird Island was sold in 2008 to Northstar Genetics of Wanamingo. Northstar Genetics was formed in 1996 and is owned by 12 seed families.
