Hog barn fire near Hector 04 Oct 18

Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a structure fire at a hog containment facility about 7 miles north of Hector on Tuesday. The initial report indicated that a barn was fully engulfed in flames. The site is owned by Ten Brook Pork, LLP. The Hector, Buffalo Lake and Cosmos Fire Departments were dispatched to respond. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that one barn was fully engulfed and had suffered significant collapse. A second barn contained heavy fire throughout its interior. Fire crews also worked to save and protect other adjacent and connected barns. Ultimately, one barn burned and collapsed and a second barn suffered significant fire damage. Both structures are considered total losses. In addition, it is estimated that approximately 500 sows and 700 multi-aged gilts perished in the fire. The cause and origin of the fire is still being investigated, but no foul play is suspected. In addition to the fire departments, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office and Buffalo Lake Police Department responded and assisted at the scene.
