Board of Brown County Commissioners table DNR request 18 Sep 18

The Board of Brown County Commissioners tabled a proposed acquisition of an eighty acre tract of land in Section 36 of Leavenworth Township by the State of Minnesota. Jeff Zajac with the DNR said the land in question is poor quality farm land. If acquired, the land would become part of the existing Verona State Wildlife Management Area and would provide year-long outdoor recreation. This land would be purchased by Pheasants Forever with a grant that they received, and then transferred to the DNR. Their proposed Payment in Lieu of Taxes is $2,885.25. Commissioner Dennis Potter expressed major issues with this purchase and purchases like it, because these properties aren’t taxed like agriculture land is, which takes money away from local schools. Commissioner Potter made the statement that the DNR prioritizes recreation over children’s education. This issue will be discussed later at the October 2nd meeting after more financial information can be gathered.
