Springfield Health System offers explanation of possible closure 07 Jul 18

A single physician provider, recruitment challenges and patients seeking outside care are the reason Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield and Lamberton may close in the near future. Medical Director Dr. Kelsey Nylander submitted her resignation effective October 2018. Dr. Nylander’s departure leaves a single physician provider and one physician cannot maintain the 24/7 on-call schedule in addition to clinical practice. In addition to Dr. Nylander’s departure, Dr. LeRoy Hodges, Springfield’s outreach general surgeon from Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Fairmont recently submitted his resignation to accept a position in Georgia to be closer to family. Despite an aggressive physician’s recruitment with a competitive compensation package, a small number of physicians have expressed interest in the position at a rural hospital in the past 5 years. This, coupled with patients utilizing health care facilities in neighboring communities; Springfield can no longer sustain a hospital and clinic.
