Brown County Historical Society exhibit wins award of merit 14 Jul 18

The Brown County Historical Society World War I exhibit has won an Award of Merit for Loyalty and Dissent from the American Association for State and Local History. The exhibit opened in May of 2017 in honor of the 100 anniversary of World War I. The exhibit tells a local story. When the United States Declared war in April 1917, more than half of Brown County residents were first or second generation Germans. In Brown County, neighbor turned against neighbor as suspicion and fear damaged old friendships and longstanding social relationships. America’s entry into World War I led to the nation’s greatest tests of the First Amendment and its limits.
