Search for missing Sleepy Eye man called off due to rising river 11 Jun 18

The search for a Sleepy Eye man who has been missing for more than a week now was called off due to heavy rains and rising river levels. The National Weather Services is reporting the Cottonwood River is at 12 feet as of 6 a.m. this (Monday) morning. Flood stage is at 11 feet. 73-year-old Vincent Mathiowetz was reported missing by his family on June 3. More agencies have joined the search including Sleepy Eye Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, New Ulm Police Department K-9 unit, Sleepy Eye Fire Department, New Ulm Fire Department, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Renville County Sheriff’s Office. Drones have also been used in the search. The focus of the search has expanded to an area about a half-mile east of the bridge. The search will continue when weather and river conditions improve.
