Detroit Lakes child injured after picking up what he thought was a cat 14 Jun 18

A Detroit Lakes 5-year-old boy has gashes on his face, not believed to be from a cat, but rather a raccoon or a fisher. Detroit Lakes  Police were called to the emergency room Friday after Xavier Garza was injured with significant cuts on his face by an unknown animal. The child told police he tried to pick up what he thought was a large black cat. The injuries to his face were so severe that police took photos and asked a veterinarian and officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to see if they had any idea what type of animal could have caused the injuries. Despite the boy’s mother’s guess that it was a cat, experts say that the attacker was likely a fisher or distempered racoon.
