Memorial Military Tribute ends with flyover 14 May 18

Two US Airforce F-16 fighter jets wrapped up a memorial tribute for Robert F. Niemann’s family at the New Ulm Cemetery Saturday morning. Flying low and fast the jets erformed the missing man formation for New Ulm native Niemann, who was shot down over North Korea on April 12, 1953. The formation is in memory of a fallen pilot where one aircraft pulls out of formation while the other continues in level flight until both are out of sight. Following the cemetery tribute, Niemann’s daughter, Ann Bakkensen says the memorial was a way to bring closure and healing for the family. After viewing the Brown County Historical Society’s Robert F. Niemann exhibit debut that included family photographs, flight books, drawings and more, Bakkensen gave a presentation about the 15 year search for her father in the Museum Annex.
