Belle Plaine residents decline community center plan 17 May 18

On May 8th, voters in the Belle Plaine School District declined the construction of a $33 million Community Center backed by the school district and the city. Voters rejected the proposal by an overwhelming margin of 2,146 to 622. The city’s portion of the proposal called for a $250-thousand dollar payment to the district and the closing of an aging municipal pool had voters approved the bond referendum. The tax burden for residents would have been around $186 dollars for the first seven years of payments going up to over $400 dollars for the last 8 years of payments.
