A brutally cold April will impact the May fishing opener. Late ice-outs are expected into the northland well into May. State wildlife officials say non of Minnesota’s over 11,000 lakes were ice free as of Friday. March was warmer than April by an average of 25 degrees and this month’s temperatures forecasts are lower than the 50-degree highs that are normal for this time of year.
