MnDOT releases ditch mowing regulations with a take some, leave some approach 10 Mar 18

New procedures have been developed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation determining the mowing of roadside ditches. The new procedures will go into effect for the upcoming haying season unless the legislature steps in. The new recommendations drop specific dates when ditches can and can’t be mowed, but they also encourage farmers to only take a portion of the available hay along the right of way and leave a portion for habitat. Permit applications can now be submitted electronically, liability insurance for farmers mowing ditches will be recommended rather than required, safety mandates will be less expensive and the agency is working on a multi-year permit for certain mowing. The full report can be found on MnDOT’s website.
