One dead in officer involved shooting in St. James 01 Feb 18

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an officer involved shooting in St. James that left one man dead.  Authorities say the incident began Wednesday morning in Nicollet County when Sheriff’s deputies spotted a vehicle in Lafayette that had been reported stolen in New Ulm earlier in the day.  Law enforcement including officers from Blue Earth and Brown County Sheriff’s Departments along with New Ulm and North Mankato police and the state patrol chased the vehicle at high rates of speed throughout the area.  During the chase, officials say the driver was identified and the chase was called off for safety reasons.  The suspect was them located in St. James where a separate police chase took place.  The suspect entered the Casey’s gas station and hid in an office.  The BCA says officers from the St. James Police Department, Watonwan County Sheriff’s Department and the state patrol entered the building and deployed multiple taser rounds.  An officer eventually shot the male suspect who was taken to a hospital in St. James and pronounced dead.  Investigators did find a knife at the scene.  One woman was taken into custody.  Names of the suspect and the officers involved will not be released until after family is notified and initial interviews are completed.
