New Ulm Council decides dogs must be leashed in public places 17 Jan 18

The New Ulm City Council unanimously approved amending an ordinance requiring dogs be on leashes in public places in New Ulm excluding private property and designated parks. Animal Control Officer Corporal Keith Anderson provided the council with a list of dog bite incidents for the past three years. There were 35 dog bite reports with 14 of those occurring with unleashed dogs. The council noted many of the dog bites occurred on private property inside a residence. The motion was made to amend the code requiring dogs and cats to be leashed on any public property including streets and right-of-ways other than the current New Ulm Dog Park and parks designated by the Park and Rec Department.
