MnDOT proposes safety improvements for Nicollet intersection 12 Jan 18

Project Manager with the Minnesota Department of Transportation Matt Young was present at the Nicollet City Council meeting held recently to discuss ways to increase safety at the Highways 99 and 111 intersection in Nicollet. Young reported to the council that the crash history is no different today than it was before the changes to the intersection and the completion of the Highway 14 Nicollet bypass. Young admitted that there have been occurences of Highway 99 traffic entering the intersection without stopping. The problem is exacerbated by the location of the stop sign and difficult sight lines that exist for westbound traffic on Highway 99 due to obstructions. Young suggested moving the flashing stop sign closer to traffic sight lines by creating a temporary bumpout, removing vegetation at the intersection and eliminating curbside parking on Highway 111. Young says the interesection will be part of the upcoming 2020 Highway 111 resurfacing project from Nicollet to Gaylord.
