Northrop elevator starts on fire following explosion 30 Dec 17

riday morning at 5 a.m. the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Truman Police Department responded to the report of a fire at the grain elevator in Northrop. This was following an explosion the day before that destroyed the top half of the building. No injuries were reported. The immediate area near the elevator was evacuated as a precaution to keep residents safe. Northrop Fire Department along with Truman and Fairmont Fire Departments were initially dispatched to the scene. Due to the cold weather and access to water, 30 other agencies assisted with mutual aid including the Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Martin County Highway Department and Fairmont City crews. Crews worked throughout the afternoon to contain flames and put out hot spots. The next step is to tear the structure down. The Old Northrop Bar opened its doors to the firefighters. Nearby businesses donated food and residents brought in whatever they had to donate. The cause of the fire and explosion are still under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office.
