Non-profit organization founders accused of theft 01 Nov 17

The founders of the non-profit organization Mending Spirits Animal Rescue are accused of stealing funds before they resigned from the organization. Tamara and Darren Scherer of Mankato have reached a civil settlement by the new leaders. The Mankato Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the misappropriation of $50,000. The Scherer’s provided board members with incomplete and falsified accounting records in 2014 and 2015 according to the lawsuit filed in December. Darren Scherer was serving as treasurer and when a new treasurer was appointed, evidence was reportedly found that the Scherer’s were using organization funds for personal benefit. The current Mending spirits board has put in multiple accounting safeguards to prevent future theft. Mending Spirits is an organization that rescues dogs and cats and finds them new homes.
