New Ulm’s Oktoberfest Celebration
NEW ULM, MINN. – Come join the “most German city in America” as they celebrate Oktoberfest on 6-7 and Oct 13-14. Now in its 36th year, New Ulm’s Oktoberfest is modeled after one of the world’s largest celebrations held for several centuries in Munich, Germany, and features music, beer, and German heritage. New Ulm’s version takes place during the first two full weekends in October with festivities happening at various locations throughout town. The main events are held in the historic downtown, Best Western Plus, Morgan Creek Vineyards, and Schell’s Brewery.

The downtown events on Saturday, October 7, include the Germanic-American Day Parade at 11am and then music and food at the corner of Center and Minnesota Streets. Local favorites Schell’s Hobo Band will play from 11am-2pm and a Johnny Cash tribute band, The Church of Cash, will play from 2-5pm.

The following Saturday, October 14, will kick off with a new parade at 10:30am. The Oktoberfest Promenade Parade is sponsored by Bank Midwest and is a “Wunderbare Parade Deutscher Dinge” (Wonderful Parade of German Things). After the parade, two local bands will perform at the downtown festival; the Wendinger Band will play from 11am-2pm followed by Effenheimer from 2pm-5pm.

German and American food provided by multiple vendors will be available for purchase at the downtown festival both Saturdays of Oktoberfest. Food vendors include Happy Joe’s, Joni’s Restaurant, Gutes Essen Catering, the New Ulm Optimist Club, and more! There will be German craft beer from Schell’s Brewery and local wine from Morgan Creek Vineyards available, as well as Angry Orchard Hard Cider and locally brewed 1919 Root Beer. New this year: the New Ulm Deutscher SprachKlub will be giving free German Lessons at 2pm both Saturdays. Another addition to the downtown festival are the Downtown Walking Tours, which will be offered at scheduled times throughout the afternoon for $10. Walking Tour tickets are limited; please purchase your tickets in advance online at or at the Chamber Office (1 N Minnesota St).

In 2014, New Ulm’s Oktoberfest was voted Best Oktoberfest by WCCO’s Best of Minnesota program, and has been ranked among the best Oktoberfest celebrations in the nation by Fodor’s Travel (2014), USA TODAY (2015), Fox News (2016), and Travel + Leisure (2017). Come see what all the fuss is about!

Besides the specific Oktoberfest festivities, many of the tourist attractions, restaurants, and retail shops look forward to welcoming festers to the community.
