Madelia manslaughter case heads to court today 02 May 17

A pre-trial hearing for the Madelia manslaughter case begins this afternoon in Watonwan County District Court. David Pettersen is facing a charge of second-degree manslaughter and reckless discharge of a firearm regarding the attempted break-in and death of 19-year-old Nicolas Embertson. Pettersen told authorities he meant to shoot at the tires of the vehicle as Embertson and his accomplices were leaving the scene. Minnesota law allows a person to use deadly force to resist or prevent great bodily harm or death. Watonwan County Attorney Steve Lindee chose to press charges as Pettersens actions did not qualify as self-defense. At his first court appearance in March, Pettersen plead not guilty.
