Man faces charges after altercation results in stabbing 18 Jul 16

A 39-year-old homeless man has been charged in connection to an altercation at his wife’s apartment that led to him getting stabbed in the leg July 12th. John W. Swinford was charged Friday in Brown County District Court with felony counts of domestic assault by strangulation and threats of violence and gross misdemeanor counts of assault and fear of bodily harm or death. His bail has been set at $100,000. According to the criminal complaint, a woman called New Ulm Police July 12th around 10:30 p.m. asking to have her husband removed from her residence due to concerns about his mental health. About 15 minutes later police were notified of a stabbing near the intersection of 1st South and Minnesota Streets near the woman’s residence. An eyewitness told police that the woman’s son and girlfriend were pinned against a couch before they were able to get Swinford off of them and push him out the door. At one point Swinford had the woman’s son pinned to the floor choking him and saying he was going to kill him. The girlfriend was unable to get Swinford to let go so she ran in the bedroom and grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the thigh. Swinford was unable to explain how the altercation began. He told police he was pinned to the floor and stabbed.
