DNR decides not to rebuild Blue Mound State Park dam 27 Jun 16

(Learfield/St. Paul)The DNR has decided against rebuilding a dam at Blue Mound State Park near Luverne in southwestern Minnesota. Heavy rain and flooding severely damaged the structure in 2014, draining the lake behind it. The DNR cited concerns about water quality such as E. coli bacteria and endangered fish species in the creek. The DNR’s Erika Rivers says they are forming a citizen advisory group to help with reshaping the park. Many are residents are disappointed with the loss of the artificial lake and losing recreational opportunities. Rock Country has no natural lakes. Officials will now work toward removing the dam and restoring Blue Mound Creek to its normal channel.
