LEGION TOURNEY BEGINS FRIDAY IN EAGAN
Sixteen teams from across the state will compete in the Minnesota American Legion Division I Baseball Tournament beginning Friday morning, Aug. 1, in Eagan.
The tourney will be played at four fields, winding up with championship action on Monday Aug. 4, at Eagan Varsity Field in Eagan. Other fields will include Red Haddox Field in Bloomington and two fields at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville.
Teams that qualified through district play include: Excelsior, Burnsville, Rochester Redhawks, Tri-City Red, Chaska, New Ulm Gold, Hutchinson, Hamline Purple, Nisswa, Delano, Alexandria, Lakeville North, Champlin Park, St. Cloud Chutes, St. Francis and host Eagan.
The champion and the runner-up will both advance to regional playoff action in Fargo in an effort to qualify for The American Legion World Series being held this year in Shelby, N.C., from Aug. 15-19.
The Central Plains regional playoff tourney will be held in Fargo, N.D., Aug. 7-11 and Minnesota will send two teams.
Last year’s Minnesota Division I champion was Eden Prairie, and the runner-up in 2013 was Burnsville.
A Division II tournament is also being held this weekend, hosted by Luverne. Games will be played beginning Friday. A national regional Division II tournament will be held in Milbank, S.D. beginning Aug. 7.
