A St. Peter Public Schools teacher accused of assaulting a student made an appearance in court Thursday, and the judge rejected a request to suppress a statement the teacher allegedly made in connection with the case. 61-year-old Robert Shoemaker is accused of striking a student on the head with a backpack during a class last September. The student was hospitalized, and reportedly suffered a neck contusion. Shoemaker’s attorney asked that statements the teacher made to a principal about the incident be suppressed in court, but the judge ruled that the statements are public data and were made voluntarily. Shoemaker’s next court date has not yet been set.
