Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer and drove in three and Phil Hughes fired seven shutout innings, as the Twins topped the Blue Jays 7-2 at Rogers Centre. Hughes struck out nine while scattering seven hits as he improved to 7-and-2. Casey Fien recorded the final four outs for his first career save. Kendrys Morales added three hits and three RBI, while Joe Mauer also had three hits and scored a run for Minnesota, which took two-of-three in the series. Jose Bautista and Dioner Navarro plated a run each in the eighth inning for the Jays, who have dropped four-of-five after a six-game winning streak. Rookie Marcus Stroman allowed three runs in six frames as he fell to 3-and-1 with his first loss.
The Minnesota Twins announced after Wednesday’s game that they have optioned catcher Josmil Pinto to Triple-A Rochester. In 43 games for the Twins, Pinto hit .222 (30-for-135) with four doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBI and 20 walks. To replace Pinto on the 25-man roster, the Twins will make a corresponding roster move prior to Friday night’s game in Detroit.
