The Brown County Board was informed Tuesday that the Brown County Teen Court program has received an award for being the longest-running program of its type in Minnesota. The county’s 16-year-old Teen Court program received the Excellence in Corrections Award from the Minnesota Association of County Probation Officers at their annual conference in Brainerd. Teen Court involves adolescents who have gotten into trouble being “tried” by a jury of their peers in a positive way. Nearly 1,000 first-time offenders have successfully competed the Brown County Teen Court program since it began, and around 75 jurors have been “trained” to hear cases and decide a fair sentence. Mary Ann Wonn has been the Brown County Teen Court Coordinator for 10 years.
