Sibley East Student Science Honor 27 May 14

A Sibley East High School student will soon have an asteroid named after him. 16-year-old Jonah Butler, the son of Bill and Christine Butler, is receiving the honor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his achievements at the 2014 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Butler was among more than 1,600 students who traveled to Los Angeles for the event. He received the MIT Grand Award after scientists reviewed his research study titled: “Employing in situ Generated Peracetic Acid and Fungal Biosynthesis to Produce Biofuels.” Not only did Butler’s research into generating increased energy yields over current manufacturing standards earn him an asteroid bearing his name, he was also presented a $12,500 sustainable development award and $3,000 for innovative thinking.
