The 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee is underway in Washington DC, and 5 teens from Minnesota have been taking part in the competition. A total of 281 students from all 50 US states, as well as US territories around the world are competing in the 2014 spelling bee. Only one of the 5 Minnesotans has moved on to the semifinal round: 13-year-old Mark Kivimaki of Edina. The eliminated Minnesota kids were from Fairmont, Slayton, Austin and Brainerd. The spelling bee preliminaries started Tuesday, and the oral spelling got underway Wednesday, with the semi-finalists and then finalists competing today (THU).
