Local Sioux Want Their Land Back 21 May 14

The Mdewakanton Sioux community has filed a lawsuit to reclaim what they say is tribal land in Redwood, Renville and Sibley Counties. The tribe says a declaration from the Secretary of the Interior in 1863 set aside 12-square miles of those counties for the Sioux, but a hostile environment prevented them from physically moving to the area at the time. Now they want the land to establish a new reservation. It’s currently owned by farmers and the three counties.
