A 20-year-old Springfield man facing a criminal sexual conduct charge made his first appearance in court on Tuesday. James Steven Carter is accused of raping his next-door neighbor early Sunday morning. Authorities say that Carter and the woman, who is four months pregnant, had briefly interacted outside of their apartment building before Carter allegedly broke through her door and sexually assaulted her at around 2:30am Sunday. The victim’s young child was reportedly sleeping in the apartment at the time of the attack as well, and the woman called 911 and was treated at the Springfield Medical Center. Carter is now facing two felony burglary charges and a gross misdemeanor charge of criminal sexual assault, and denies the allegations against him. His bail was set at $100,000 without conditions on Tuesday, or $15,000 with certain conditions such as a 10 o’clock curfew and no drug or alcohol consumption. He is no longer in custody, but is scheduled to be back in court on April 15th.
