A junior at United South Central High School has been expelled for the rest of the school year after school officials found a pocketknife in her purse. The unanimous decision to expel Alyssa Drescher was made Thursday night during a school board meeting which reportedly seemed more like a court case. Drescher’s father had asked for the meeting to be open to the public, unlike typical expulsion cases, to allow her supporters the opportunity to attend. United South Central officials defended their position by stressing the fact that the district’s zero-tolerance policy does not give the school the flexibility to make judgments on how much danger people are in. The meeting consisted of two hours of testimony and an hour of deliberation. The Drescher family has said that they will fight the ruling.
