New Ulm’s August Schell Brewing Company brought 2 medals home from the recently concluded 2014 World Beer Cup competition. Schell’s won a Gold Medal in the Vienna-Style Lager category for its Firebrick, a reddish-amber lager with a light hoppy finish. Schell’s was also awarded a Bronze Medal in the German-Style Sour Ale category for its Framboise du Nord, a red-pink Berliner Weisse with notes of raspberry. The World Beer Cup is considered the “Olympics of Beer Competition.” There were over 4,700 entries this year from more than 1,400 breweries in 58 countries. The winners were selected by an international panel of 219 judges from 31 countries. Schell’s is the oldest family-owned brewery in Minnesota, and the second oldest in the United States.
