A statewide online voter registration site will be created for Minnesota now that Governor Dayton has signed legislation rushed through the state capitol this week. The bill sailed through the House 129-2 and passed the Senate 41-24. The new law also lets voters apply for absentee ballots through the Secretary of State’s website. Registering to vote using the online system will require an e-mail address as well as a driver’s license, state ID card, or the last four digits of the applicant’s Social Security number. The need to pass legislation to create such a website came after a judge ordered Secretary of State Mark Ritchie to shut down the already-operating voter registration website that was launched in September after ruling that Ritchie lacked the statutory authority to create it.
