A barn in rural Morton was destroyed by a fire Saturday afternoon, and it’s been determined that it was started by children playing with fire. The Morton Fire Department responded to the barn fire at the Aaron and Brandy Deterling farm on County Road 2 at around 2pm Saturday and found the barn completely engulfed in flames. The Franklin Fire Department was called in for assistance, but the barn was a complete loss, along with several chickens and the contents of the building. The fire was apparently started when three of the Deterling children decided to have a campfire, but failed to completely extinguish it. A recent study found that more than half of children report playing with fire by the time they are out of elementary school. Parents are encouraged to have a conversation with their kids about fire danger.
