The New Ulm Police Department continues to investigate a report of a suspicious person attempting to pick up a 14-year-old girl last weekend, and similar reports are now coming in from other area communities. The Sleepy Eye Police Department is investigating a report that a Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s drove past an 8-year-old child several times in an unknown black van last week. The man apparently did not stop or talk with the child, but the child did express a concern for his safety to his parents. A similar incident involving a black minivan and a Hispanic male was reported in Madelia last month as well. The New Ulm incident involved a man in his late 20s or early 30s with short dark brown hair driving a newer black 4-door car. The suspect reportedly told the 14-year-old that it was late and her parents had sent him to pick her up, but the girl refused the ride. Anyone with information on any of these incidents is encouraged to contact their local law enforcement, and parents are encouraged to talk to their children on how to handle encounters with strangers.
