Investigators have determined the cause of a fire that destroyed a garage in New Ulm last week. The New Ulm Fire Department responded to the garage fire on South Front Street at around 12:30am on Friday, and the structure was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The garage was a total loss, although no injuries were reported. The subsequent investigation has determined the cause of the fire to be the mishandling of flammable liquids.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a fire near Lafayette Friday morning that killed nearly a thousand hogs. Crews were called to the Steve and Mary Langhorst Farm southeast of Lafayette after flickering lights were reported in a barn. Three hog barns were fully engulfed when firefighters arrived and are considered a total loss. Firefighters from Lafayette, Nicollet, New Ulm, Winthrop, Gaylord, and Courtland all assisted at the scene. Langhorst Pork Incorporated says in a statement that it plans to rebuild the facility and is working with authorities and its insurance company to determine the cause.
