A resident of a 2-story apartment at Center and Front Streets in New Ulm is reportedly in critical condition after a fire broke out Thursday night. The New Ulm Fire Department responded to the call at the Ackerson Apartments at around 9:30pm Thursday. Smoke was pouring from the building when firefighters arrived on the scene as they fought to bring the fire under control in sub-zero temperatures. A resident of the upper level of the apartments was reportedly hospitalized in critical condition, and another tenant having trouble breathing was also taken to the New Ulm Medical Center. No names have been released at this time. Five other tenants were able to escape the building safely, and Red Cross personnel provided assistance, including getting them hotel rooms for the night. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the state fire marshal will investigate.
