Gopher Men Lose,Men’s Hockey Play Tonight 14 Feb 14

The University of Minnesota men’s basketball team turned the ball over 13 times in a 78-70 loss last night at number-21 Wisconsin.   Andre Hollins led the Golden Gophers with a game-high 22 points and Malik Smith added 14 off the bench.   The Badgers played tough defense in the paint, holding Minnesota big men Elliot Eliason and Maurice Walker to a combined seven points.   Wisconsin also made 30 free throws while Minnesota went 15 of 20 from the charity stripe.   The Gophers fall to 5-and-7 in Big Ten play and travel to Northwestern on Sunday. 

 #2 Gopher Men’s Hockey vs. #11 Michigan

The second-ranked University of Minnesota men’s hockey team hosts number-11 Michigan in their first-ever Big Ten series this weekend.  The Gophers are coming off a two-game sweep at Wisconsin that ended a 15-week reign as the top team in the nation.  The Wolverines split two games at Penn State last weekend.  Minnesota is 8-2-2 in conference play, Michigan has a 6-3-1-1 record in the Big Ten.  The U-of-M will honor U.S. Hockey of Hall of Fame member, Olympic silver medalist and all-time leading scorer John Mayasich of Eveleth tonight at Mariucci Arena. 

 U of M Regents To Vote on Vikings TCF Bank Stadium Plan

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents is expected to approve six-point-six-million dollars in renovations for TCF Bank Stadium at today’s meeting.  The Minnesota Vikings are paying for the upgrades so they can use the Gopher football field for two seasons while their new stadium is under construction.  The plan includes artificial turf with a heating system, heated restrooms and elevator lobbies, plus air curtains, and 17-hundred-50 temporary bleachers.  The money comes from the budget for the new 975-million-dollar Vikings stadium.
